how to reset odometer and remove service light counter 200 1987

The instrument cluster out of an '89 245 has 20,000 fewer miles than my current, non-working odometer. How can I reset the mileage to the number shown on my old unit ?

This speedometer has the service reminder counter/light. Can I remove the guts from that portion without screwing up the rest of the speedo/odometer ?

Is there anything that I can do to make this unit more relaible long term ?
