Repairs we have to do, and a needed opinion 200 1991

So, we're picking up my new volvo today, and tentatively we are going to do the following:

1. Battery Replacement.
As far as we know, we believe the car starting once, running, being shut off and then not starting again is hopefully just a new battery fix, not an alternator.

2. Timing Belt
We don't know when this was last done, so we figured we might as well get this done right away.

3. Fluids
We're going to drain and replace all fluids, oil, transmission, etc...

4. Good coat of armor all, vacuum, wash and wax.

My car should be running as good as new.

Now, my reason for posting this was my concern about item 1.

When I went to test drive it, the car started up right away, no problem. My dad wanted to see the engine in action, listen for any odd noises and what have you. Passed his inspection, so we shut the car of. When we went to restart it, it would try to turn over, but would not. Hooked up via jumper cables to my mothers 96 caprice classic, she started up after 30 seconds of charge.

I sped off (not literally, it's 114 hp haha), and drove for a good two miles, went to do a turn around, and the car stalled. I'm all too famliar with stalling (again, I'm driving a 1979 buick), so I did what you're supposed to do, shut the car off, restarted and the battery was dead. Again, jumped, and started in just a second, ran fine, but when turned off again, wouldn't start.

Does this sound like an alternator issue, or a battery issue? She isn't sure when the battery was replaced. My dad isn't sure which it is, only because we don't run our batteries to the death.

Opinions?

again, I purchased a '91 240 with 149k, sedan, perfect shape.

I'll post pictures as I fix her up :]
