My local auto electrician insists I must have a relay between the auto gearbox inhibitor switch and the pre-engagement section of my starter motor, neither of us can find it and my haynes manual says nothing [is there such a thing, he says there must be to take the engagement power, 60A?].
Symptoms were slow or intermittently no turn over, the starter was replaced for worn brushes, broken brush mountings and possible bad turns on the armature. It now turns over much more quickly but still occasionally is dead [no dimming of lights etc], movement of gearlever makes no difference and only lots of key turning will suddenly fire it up, he insists there is a dodgy relay there somewhere, does anyone have any idea where to look for it.
Does this mysterious relay really exist or should I be connecting up a permanent test lead to the ignition swith output and awaiting the next failure?
Any help/comments will be "very much appreciated". Thanks, Bob Green, UK.
