I have officially been driving my 1991 240 for one week now. The saga of this car really is awesome. I've been looking for one for about 2 months, and we found some that we really liked, including a '91 for 800 dollars. The man did not want to sell it to a "kid", however. So, disappointed, we kept looking. Browsing craigslist everyday was something that became routine, and one day, the craigslist I never checked held a 240 that, from the photographs, looked average.
The list price was 2000. I was hoping and praying she'd sell it to me for 1400. The lowest she'd go was 1700. My father said... it might be worth it, lets take a look. We got there, my dad looked on the underside, and popped the engine to look for any potential problems, just by sight. The car was a southern car (we're from michigan)... and according to my dad, looked like it was 2 years old. With 149000 miles on it, my dad knew it was a great deal, and we bought it for 1700. The only problem we encountered from the get-go was an alternator that didn't really want to work when we needed it to (for example, when we were trying to drive it the 45 minutes home).
I LOVE LOVE LOVE driving this car. I feel like everyone is admiring my car when i'm driving it, and you can't blame them. The ONLY flaws on the paint are a faded sunroof. Cosmetic flaws are cracked map pockets, bottom trim has come detached, a cracked dash on the top part, and the accents on the back deck have come to crumble as a result of southern sun.
We've put about 400 dollars in it, mostly just replacing fluids, oil change, etc. We replaced the alternator which was the most costly repair thus far.
What we want to do sometime soon
1. Figure out why Overdrive is functioning as it is (almost a grinding sound)
2. Look into replacing the dash
3. Figure out why the heated seats aren't working
Again, I absolutely am in love with this car. I love driving it, it handles like a dream, and it is so spacious. I'm 5'7", my dad is 6'2", and we both find it very comfortable.
He's got me on a desperate hunt to find him one for him! (he was completely opposed to buying a foreign car, especially a volvo)
Okay. well.
For anyone who isn't sure about purchasing this car, buy it. Even if it takes some money to fix it up, it's worth it. I was so fortunate to find a car in such immaculate condition.
:]
(hint hint, if anyone has any tips on the afforementioned problems, shout at me!)
