Strange Engine 900 1991

I looked at a 1991 940 NA this weekend. I have a 760 T and have worked on my brothers 240 and my friends 940 T. The engine in the 1991 940 looked very different, the valve cover was large and square. The alt. and PS pump had pulley extension to make the belts line up with the crank pulley. The intake manifold looked very different too.

I search google images and could not find one like it.

Does anyone else know what I am talking about? Was this some kind of "different" engine?
