Rope trick question 200 1993

I am in the process of doing all the front seals,gaskets, timing belt,tensioner,water pump, hoses and belts along with new timing covers.
I lined everything up then cut the old oil soaked timing belt off along with the drive belts.Is it too late to do the rope trick ? Do I now need the crank pulley holder tool ?
