Cruise Control did not disengage! 200 1986

Tonight on the drive home I set the cruise on 72 and headed down the Beltway home. There has been this strange irritating oscillation to the cruise all week long. What was happening was this oscillation up and down, except going up hill. For the only time I can remember my speed was constant up hills where normally I lost speed going up hill.

About half way through the drive I had to brake from some traffic, and as I started to accelerate Inga suddenly surged forward and headed for 72 so I hit the brake to disengage. But she still wanted to go 72 miles an hour. I could take the tip of my shoe and slow her down by pushing up under the petal. When the pressure was removed the car would start to accelerate again.

Turned the switch to off and still had cruise, hit the brake several times without effect. The brakes were more than strong enough to stop the car. Finally pulled off on the shoulder and killed the engine. When I restarted the problem was gone. Did not however turn the cruise back on the rest of the way home. And it will stay that way until the cause of this is found.

This is a factory installed cruise control, and up till now the only issue I have had with it was cased by vacuum leaks.

First can someone give me a quick basics of Volvo Cruise control, and anybody know what the heck is going on here?

Thanks and Regards,

Paul (AKA The Duck)
