speedometer/fuel gauge intermitten failure 200 1989

I have a new problem with an old car,shortly after replacing the alternator and battery my speedo and fuel gauge have started acting up in uni sine.I will start the car from cold and have no fuel gauge or speedo and the within two three min.of running they both pop on at the same time.I have tried wiggling the ignition switch and also felt around for loose connections behind the cluster without positive results. Does anyone know if there is a common connection between the fuel gauge and the speedometer? perhaps a problem area? thanks for any advise.
