Well, I replaced front struts and mounts on my car ('98 V90, 124k) last weekend; everything seemed fine for a while, but now all of a sudden I'm getting a rather strong clunk when going over bumps, etc. It's mostly noticeable at small speeds; sounds like something is coming loose. I can reproduce it by bouncing the front end (sounds like a click then), seems to come from one of the struts (mount?) but it's really hard to tell. I raised the car, grabbed the wheels and tried to see if I can find any play, none. Took the wheels off, checked all the bolts that I had to replace when I did the job, everything seems tight. I then had my wife to drive the car slowly while I was watching the wheels, I noticed that when starting from a standstill and stopping, both front wheels have quite a bit of forward-backward play. I'm not sure if it has to do with the clunk, and I know that the bushings on the control arm are not in good shape (that was the next thing I was going to replace). Could that be it? What other things should I check before I go to redo the job? Ball joints seem fine, steering feels normal (in fact it feels smoother than it used to be with the old mounts and bearings).
All parts I used were genuine Volvo stuff, and I followed the green book manual for the procedure.
Any help would be appreciated.
