760 no start -- neutral safety or ignition switch? 700 1990

The car is a 1990 760 Turbo. Today, out of the blue, it decided not to start. No click, nothing.

I had an old 240 in which the neutral safety switch went out, but for a while before it failed completely, I could get the car to start if I pushed around on the gearshift lever. Tried that with the 760, but no joy. Tried it both in park and neutral.

I also had an '88 760 in which the ignition switch failed, but I don't recall specifically anymore why I replaced it. Been too long.

I was able to start the car by shorting across the terminals on the solenoid, so I know the starter is good.

I read through the FAQ and it described the neutral safety -- or start inhibitor or whatever -- switch as the culprit. I'm thinking that the ignition switch might also be a possibility though? When I turn the key to the run position, all the dash lights light, and when I turn it to the "crank starter" position, the light for the auto tranny's OD switch also illuminates, which as I recall is normal.

Just wondering if anyone might care to shed some light on a test procedure I might attempt to isolate the culprit.

In the meantime, I've got a screwdrive and flashlight in my glovebox . . .

Thanks,

Michael
