Early 164 chrome windowsill 140-160 1969

The 164s have a chrome windowsill on each door. I have opened up the door on mine but cannot
figure out how this stainless strip is attached to the door.
The reason this is a problem is that I put a later model window scraper in the door some 35 years ago
when the snap-in rubber strip wouldn't snap any more. During the subsequent 20 years in the Panamanian
daily rain, the plastic channel with gripper teeth inside that holds the newer-style scraper to the door
stayed full of water 8+ months of the year and eventually rusted the vertical steel edge of the door.
I fished the channel out of the bottom of the door today and there is not much to fasten a new scraper to.
I'm thinking of putting a sheetmetal angle section in there but the stainless sill is in the way
and I really don't think putting screws THROUGH it is a good idea. But until I find out what holds it on,
I'm reluctant to try very hard to get it off.
The sills on my 1966 122 wagon are held on with spring clips but there is nothing like that on the 164.
¿Could they be glued on?
