Gear change indicator repair 700 1985

Does anyone know how to fix a gear change indicator that no longer moves with the lever?

Car has ZF auto gear change that has the chrome lever, no O/D button and I believe it was used up to about 1989.

I took it apart and it has the plastic strip that is supposed to move but there is no way for the strip to be moved by the lever. I dont know how it was moved when it was in working order or I might know how to fix it.

Is the indicator mechanism the same for any brand of auto box?

I can figure out the positions but my wife would like to have the indicator working. Light works.
