Hi all:
I have a 1998 Volvo, S90, B6304S engine. This is a continuation of some earlier posts I made.
I’m just about ready to pull the cam carrier off of the head, (48 bolts) and then pull the head. I need to do a valve job (idler pulley failed and it jump about 10 teeth).
Prior to doing anything, I aligned the 2 CAM gears and the crankshaft gear on their respective marks.
Here is my issue. I forgot to mark the intake cam gear position before I loosened the 3 bolts to remove it. As you may be aware, the 3 holes that the bolts go thru on the cam gear are actually slotted. I tried to set the cam gear position back using the outline that the bolts heads made on the gear face. I think I got it close, but I may be off 1 – 2 teeth maybe.
The exhaust cam I did mark, so this is not an issue.
So here are my questions?
Q1. I was told that it’s best to leave the CAM gears on each cam as I disassemble the engine. Is this best?
Q2. Once I’m reassembling the intake cam that into the carrier (after the value job) how do I check and set the relationship of the intake cam to the intake gear, since I forgot to mark it?
Q3. The timing alignment marks (1 for each cam, 1 for the crank gear) once set, do not represent TDC in the #1 cylinder. (so I’m told). Is there some offset value (in degrees) that will allow me to correctly set the intake cam position, while viewing that all the valves are closed on the # 1 cylinder?
Q4. Before I do any disassembly, if I knew the amount of teeth on the timing belt (which I don’t) that spans from the exhaust cam mark to the intake cam mark, would this reset the intake cam gear properly, ?
Q5. Another mistake I made was that I should have photographed or sketched up the quantity of timing belt teeth between the various 3 marks. Does anyone have this info?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated
Thank-you….Mr. Tool
