torque converter locking up - shift warning flashing 900 1992

torgue converter ocassionally stays locked in gear. shift to nuetral and back into drive, ok till the next occurance, usually in start stop drive mood. shift arrow warning appeared this am. trans not shifting into 4th gear. driving trans option selector flashing. are we talking trashed torque converter or could it be electrical? need advice. thankyou.
