Stupid, yes. I picked up a nice 1991 240 in Sarasota saturday and drove it to Cincinnati, ohio 1050 miles. I checked the oil at the first two fillups and at a rest stop somewhere around northern Georgia, mid Tenn. about 500-600 miles into the trip. Then, the road fatigue set in after flying in the night before and driving 20 hours straight through and assuming (theres that word) that I hadn't bought an oil burner because it hadn't used a drop up until then, I didn't check it again the rest of the trip, approx. 500 to 600 miles.
Well, this morning, I pulled the dip stick and it was halfway down the stamped section, which I thought is about a quart. I had to put in approx.1/2 - 3/4 of a quart to bring it back to the full mark.
My stupid question of the week is did I do any damage, or better put any premature wear on this engine? I am so pissed at myself I can't tell you.
Thanks for any input. I know there are some pro mechanics on this forum, hopefully I will get a response.
