No Power to Radio or Cigarette Lighter 900 1992

I plugged in a ac to dc power converter into the cigarette lighter in my 1992 volvo 940 gl and there was a small electrical sound and the radio went dead. It will not turn on and the cigarette lighter also does not work. the light on the radio buttons that says cd continues to flash as normal. What is wrong/happened?
