I have had a singing/whining/wailing sound from somewhere under the car for a few months now. It is related to car speed, not engine speed. It occurs mostly during the initial 5 minutes, and only at lower speeds.
Now there is a vibration in the body. Not much below 40mph, obvious at 43, and more so from 50-70.
Also get some jerking starting off at low speeds, thought it felt like a poor mixture, but maybe it's a different form of the vibration.
Car had code for idle air solenoid, but it works OK with the ECU test sequence operating it, but I get an idle which will "hang" at 1500 for about 10seconds before coming down.
Under the car, I twisted the driveshaft, checked for play in the universals, and pushed at the center bearing. I can get the whole rubber doughnut to move 1/2 inch, but no looseness. Not sure how much movement in doughnut is acceptable.
How to tell if bearing needs replacement? How stiff should that doughnut be?
(from a crossword last weekend, a doughnut should be called a torus I guess).
