I'm looking at an out of state Volvo 1975 164E and I've been calling independent mechanics around Los Angeles to service or at least look at the car when I bring it home and I cannot find anyone who will touch a car this old. Their cutoff point seems to be 1980.
A couple of times now I've called independent Volvo mechanics and they laugh at me on the phone. Not exactly inspiring faith in buying this car. Heck I even had someone laugh at me in Swedish!
I can turn a wrench for simple things like brakes and tuneups but for the larger jobs I would like to have a mechanic around here in Los Angeles that I can trust and have a good relationship with.
Also I'll piggyback on this post and probably start another about the used price of a 164E with manual transmission. I'm willing to pay about $1,100 and I think the seller is asking $1,500. The car appears to run well with no major problems and is quite good in appearance with very little surface rust. I guess I'm looking for somebody to tell me I'm not insane for doing this, am I? I just like the 164 very much.
And so does anyone out there have some suggestions as to good mechanics that would be willing to work on a 1975 Volvo around Los Angeles?
Thanks for the help.
