How do you test the wiring to Vehicle Speed Sensor in rear diff? 200 1989

I have had an intermittent spedo/odo for awhile. When it works they both work, but they have been dead know for awhile. I replaced the speedo head and had the same intermittent bouncing needle, then working, then dead. I am thinking it is most likely the wiring to the sensor in the differential. I have checked the plug and sensor and they appear free of corrosion. The wire seems to disappear up into the trunk cabin area. How would I go about testing the wiring to the sensor and tracing where the fault is? I have a basic multimeter and electrical test light kit.

Thanks,

Ryan
