Low coolant temps - Sensor issues maybe? 200 1987

When I got the car in the summer, the water temp gauge stayed in the middle and sometimes went up on a hot day. Nowadays it stays very low. Once it was barely over the bottom white line. I then changed the thermostat. Coolant level fine. Top rad hose has pressure and is hot. Now it shows still pretty low, always in the bottom half, and not erratic. Before I bypass the comp board, should I try replacing the coolant temp sensor on the engine block? What are the symptoms of bad temp sensor? 65K miles.
Thanks!
