20W-50 weight oil--what's the deal? 200 1989

Stopped by Pep Boys today to get a 4-qt bottle of Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 synthetic blend. They didn't have the 40 grade so I went for the 10W-30. Then I happened upon two Castrol synth blend 20W-50 weight oil for $3 each (last two left it appeared). These two bottles plus two regular dino Castrol 20W-50 were cheaper then the Valvoline. I figured that since the weather is warming up and I've been doing a lot of city driving, 20W-50 would be better, but it was mainly the price. I usually run 10W-30 or 40, but I couldn't pass up on this deal. It seems a lot of bricksters here run the lower weight oil. This makes me wonder why many indies use 20W-50 oil for oil changes. Is it cheaper?
