I am preparing to replace the strut cartridges and ball joints on a 1988 244.
I saved a nice pair of strut bearings from a car I parted out. They seem to be in excellent condition and rotate freely. I cleaned up the area around the bearing and carefully removed the dust cover.
As you can see the original grease does not seem contaminated, but seems to be somewhat "clotted". A sample rolled between finger and thumb reveals no real dryness, clumping, or foreign matter.
I would like to press in some addition grease. I decided that wheel bearing grease would be as good as any but that is nothing more than an uneducated guess.
What do you think?
