Bets way to diagnose why 1st gear sometimes won't engage 1800

Any advice on what could be the cause why 1st gear and sometimes other gears won't engage?

My initial reaction is that I may need to look at the master and slave cylinder on my 65 P1800. So before I even look at stripping the gearbox, any other suggestions?
