Driver's seat height, What gives? 700

Evening all,
After spending some time behind the wheel in the "new" car, a 1990 740GL, I seem to bashing my head off the roof when hitting sharp bumps, which doesn't happen when driving my '88 745GLE. They both have black leather, manual seats. I've read the FAQ's about seat height, but there seems to be some question about what year(s) are adjustable, or maybe I didn't read it correctly.
Has anyone else run into this, or have some insight? Maybe I can drive from the backseat......
