Down pipe to cat gasket/sealant question 200 1986

I recall years ago when I replaced my header pipe to the manifold I used a sealant in addition to the gaskets to seal up a fitful exhaust leak. I'll be replacing my cat this weekend and was wondering if I should use the same thing or just place and tighten down the new cat gasket and assume it will be leak free? Also, should I put an exhaust clamp on the end of the cat pipe where it attaches to the front of the first muffler? Thanks for your thoughts.
