home brew fuel injector cleaning, 1991 240, write up 200

Hi Friends,
I thought it was about time to write up my old thread about fuel injector cleaning for a 240 with LH 2.4 (B230F)

As it happens, that is a read-only thread by now. You can imagine how thorough I was with those injectors... The post is here:
Old post on FI cleaning

First things first, many thanks to you for all the input, great stuff!!

Things I have learned:
The injectors have a resistance of 16ohm, measured more like 15.5 - 16. They operate with 12V, on, off. That is different for the injectors in a B230FT engine it seems, those are described on Mike Ponte's site in the FAQ.
BUT: you can pulse the injectors with MUCH LOWER voltage, and it is likely to be safer: the FIs don't get hot, and spark doesn't seem to be a problem (but they still open).

Check out my set up on the pic below, this is what I did:
Voltage came from 4 tired AA batteries, to the tune of 5.5V. Just 2 are not enough. I soaked the injectors (after removing seals and plastic tips) in FI cleaner over night. Then connected the top if the FI to a household vacuum cleaner (using a sparkling wine cork and a vinyl tube, same ID as the one for transmission flushing). Then: vac on, pulse the FIs a few times, done. The gunk collects on the walls of the tube.

Regarding spark: the cleaner I used wasn't very volatile, 'Gumout concentrated FI cleaner', from a gas station, and with the low voltage, there was never any spark. Still, don't do this at home.

Result: Sweet. No kidding, engine is more quiet and smooth. I also replaced the rubber seals, though. I am very happy with the engine now, after a long time of fighting rough idle and hard hot starts.

Everything else you'd like to know about injectors, read Jorrell's post in the original thread.

Again, thanks guys! Long live the BB.
