Chip in a 940 brick? 900 1995

Thanks for your suggestions on my HG weep. I'll go ahead pull the head and send it off. In the meantime I'll buy another 940 to use.

This one came across my radar w/ a hard to believe 83,000 original miles at a very fair price but I'm skeptical. The guy claims he's not a dealer (carfax says it was bought at auction in Febuary)and since it's sight unseen and 300 miles away I've scheduled the Volvo dealer to inspect it tomorrow morning.

The Volvo service guy said among the things they look at in an inspection is a chip in addition the the mechanical odometer to verify the mileage? On an 1995 940??? Is this true? Can it be defeated by dishonest used car guys?
