88 745, wife’s car, well maintained.
Started a few days ago. She complained that it dies (or rpm drops) sometimes on local or highway. Today, I started driving it to see what’s wrong with it. It started fine in the morning. After driving at local speed for 20 minutes, it starts to act up in front of the red light. Idles rough. Once the traffic light turns green, if I slowly step on the gas pedal it will get up to speed just fine and keeps driving. However, if I step on the gas hard, the engine will hesitate or die. According to what she told me, I was thinking about the hall sensor inside the big distributor (I really hate it if it’s that thing going wrong). According to what I saw this morning, it’s most likely not the hall sensor. If it was, when it acts up the engine should die immediately.
This is what I think:
1. It’s not likely the hall sensor.
2. It’s not likely the ignition system (hall, coil, distributor, wire and plug).
3. It IS likely the fuel system (fuel pump relay, radio interference relay, the fuel pressure regulator is new, less likely the AMM but possible)
I guess that since the symptom is intermittent, I either have to drive it until it completely quit and fix it, or somebody knows exactly what’s wrong and let me know. Thanks for reading. EYYU
