driveline vibration 700

I have a 1987 740 GLE that suffers from a low rpm vibration. My research has instructed me to either elevate or decrease the horizontal plane of the center bearing. My question is what would necessitate the need to alter this positioning on a precision built vehicle like a Volvo?
I have made this effort, raised the positioning 1/4 inch and have felt a decrease in the vibration on take off but am confused as to why.
Is the tale shaft bearing worn or do I have an out of balance drive line?
