Dead Battery

I have a 1989 that has been sitting up for a while and i amm certain that the battery is shot. I was wondering if I can use any 12-volt auto battery just to see if it will start or do I need to get a battery that is specific to this model and year? Any chance of damaging the electrical system by doing this?

Thanks.
