Tach dropped - broke needle off 200 1983

I had intended to install a large tach from a '83 245 GLT into the gage cluster of a '92 245 DL, replacing the large clock and install a small clock. Clumsy me, I drop the tach. It takes one bounce off the driver side door threshold and lands on the concrete driveway. The needle has separated from the tach! Bummer!

There is a shaft about 1/4" attached to the needle. This shaft has a very small diameter and from my eyeball examination, its end appears to have a "lap". I'm not sure if (a) the shaft slides into the end of the opposite shaft which might have a lap end, (b) the shaft broke - seems that the needle end shaft has a slightly smaller diameter though, or (c) some other explanation I haven't discovered.

I have attempted to press the shaft back into the tach but this doesn't work except in one positon, about 2K rpm. Even then the needle falls back out.

I don't dare apply any adhesive. There is always e-Bay for a replacement tach. Can tach's be sent off somewhere for repair? Can tach's be DIY repaired, maybe by using a needle from any other gage? What is the true description of the needle attachment to the tach?
