removal of AC unit -- how to, etc.? 200

So the radiator support for my 245 is smashed in along with the headlights n' stuff, AC looks intact but I have to remove everything in order to get the radiator support out in order to be replaced, and this means the AC has to go, too. I don't mind ditching the AC unit itself and never using it again but I don't want to poison the planet with its R12 freon (presumably that's the stuff, this car is 23 years old and i don't think the coolant was ever changed). Can I take remove it safely without cutting any lines or anything, or will it have to be drained first? space is minimal now after the accident, but i can't tell you to what extent or how near the AC is right now to the alternator and that kind of thing (hood is still stuck). should I assume it can't be done by a novice and i need to get it drained beforehand, and if so can anyone say if that is gonna be a difficult/expensive task? i heard a rumor that some AC places like old freon and might even take it for free or pay, but that sounds too good to be true. Just wanna know when i need to get started on this bad boy. thanks for your ideas
