how to recalibrate gas gauge ? 200 1987

I was driving along minding my own business and glanced at the gas gauge. The needle was below the white line below the red section of the gas gauge. I pulled in to a nearby station and put in 14 gallons ('87 245). Clearly I was not paying attention and the gas gauge is overly pessimistic.

Is there a way to recalibrate the gas gauge ? If so how do you do it ?
