ol' Betsy reached 5500 rpm the hard way today... 700

My 1991 745 is a great car, really a cream puff since I bought her two years ago. Bought with 102k miles, she only has 120k miles now. But, more and more things have been failing on her and most within the last two months, much to the chagrin of me and my wife.

Today a problem with the kickdown cable getting jammed caused it to search for a gear on the highway and rev to 5500rpm. I tried backing down in speed, but the trans would only work in 2nd gear (AW70). So, I slowed down, but that was still not enough to travel at a safe speed in rush hour traffic. So, I put it in D and the engine spun up to 5500rpm and then kicked up a gear to settle at 4000rpm. It would not upshift another gear to settle down to its usual 2700rpm or so at about 65mph. So, I traveled gingerly home spinning the engine up as soon as the car encountered even the faintest of inclines under load. This lasted about 15 miles.

I don't think I did any ridiculous damage. The engine had an oil change about 1000 miles ago and will be receiving another ASAP. The trans fluid was flushed just days ago (and slightly overfilled). some seals looks to have leaked from peeking in the engine bay after this episode, but not too badly.

I know the culprit of tonight's episode: a stuck kickdown cable. It was unwound when I looked under the hood tonight.

So, having looked through the TRANS part of the FAQ, I cannot find a remedy to this problem other than to find out what went wrong with the cable. But, I doubt that I can get far enough under the car to properly r/r this part, but I'm going to try.

Any advice if I do?
