740 GLE no charging 700

Hi, quite some time since I posted here, but wondered if I might get help with this problem.

Recently brought K-jet 1988 740 GLE back into use and the battery has gone flat after a few days. Voltage at battery shows no charge, either initially or when engine revved past 2000 rpm. Dash indicator lights on turning the key, goes out when engine fires.

Had a non charging issue approx 10K miles ago when the blue earth on the alternator seemed to be the cause - but never firmly established as fault went off after brush pack was checked and replaced.

Tried using a jump lead to earth the alternator - no difference.

Essentially there is no indication of no charge except by measuring the voltage of the battery.

Only other change recently is the tacho has become a bit erratic - but didn't think this was likely to be related.

I can't remember what can cause this on a 740 (have been driving 240 last couple of years).

Can anyone help with this one.
