Well, my wife's wagon failed emissions.Numbers are:
25 mph Test-HC 100 ppm (117 allowed),CO% .45 (.65 allowed),NOx 1284 ppm (821 allowed)
15 mph Test-HC 79 (120),CO% .50 (.67), NOx 2033 (907)
My prime suspect is an exhaust leak at the manifold-to-downpipe joint (stripped threads, borrowed a tap&die set)). I will fix this-should be fixed anyway.I will also replace the fuel filter-no records on it-has been replaced once (made in Spain, I think indicates so) but car has 193K miles on it.One question-I noticed a long slit corroded in the tailpipe along its top seam. Muffler bandage should temporarily fix this for the re-test.Could this be a factor in the failure? Emissions guy told me "holes in exhaust pipe" could cause a failure-I understand how a leak upstream of the cat can cause it to see too much air to work properly. What is the effect (on the emission probe) of this leak?
sredwine also has a '94 940 with 224K-and it passed!
