An ECU with a ERG? w/o ERG? What's the difference? 200

Still trying to solve some CEL codes, now swapping ECU's.

I have been reading alot about ECU's with and w/o ERG. What is the difference?

My '89 240 was manufactured on the East Coast and is now in California. It has the original ECU #561 (Pink label Bosch with a volvo sticker on it). It pulls a code of 1-1-3.

When I put in a ECU #556 (Pink label Bosch, no volvo sticker) it pulls a 2-2-1 code?

Can someone elaborate on why these would pull different codes and how do I know if I have or need an ECUw or w/o an ERG?

What is ERG???!
