I just purchased a 1961 544 which appears to be in fairly good condition, but does have 50 year old issues and needs some major cleaning and conditioning. Is there suppose to be a wire coming out of the front of the steering box??. It doesn't appear to go to anything and doesn't look like it was original. I also would like to know how do I get the top cover off the steering box. I checked the fluid level and it was dry, I decided to replace the gaskets, so I removed the 4 bolts that hold the top down and got it to move, but it only lifts about an 1/8 of an inch and seems to have something else holding it on. I don't want to force it and possible cause damage. Is there a trick to removing it, do I have to remove the front plate first???.
I also would like to know what I have to do to remove the oil pan. I removed all the bolts, but the pan will not slide out, do I have to lift the engine to slide the pan out.
I also plan on replacing the engine mounts, can I just remove the bolts, lift the engine with a floor jack and will the mounts come out without any other problems. I know I've asked alot of questions, but I seem to be running into minor problems with repairs.
