moldy smell in AC vents ... only when AC is off...? 900 1997

I will post more about my latest purchase here very soon (1997 965) but I did notice that when driving it home (about 350 miles), the AC vents exuded a definite moldy smell. It seemed to dissipate somewhat when the AC was turned on.

Is there a filter or some such thing that would be holding mold or could it be standing water in a low part of the system (an ominous thought). Honestly, I am just guessing at either one, I have no idea.
