I posted Davide's great instructions on how to repair leaking capacitors in Volvo 700/900 speedometers. They were in the FAQ unread, at least by me, until this week when son Peter's car suffered intermittent odometer failures. The odo would die but restart when I turned on the air conditioning, a sure sign of an intermittent short. I pulled the cluster, extracted the speedometer according to Davide's excellent article, and looked for the offending capacitors. Sure enough, one had leaked and corroded the IC pins next to it, causing a short through the corrosion bloom. I did not remove the circuit board since I had decent access to the area from the side. After applying DeOxIt with a small brush, it cleaned up nicely. Reinstalled and it works fine, although I have ordered four new capacitors from Digikey to install when I get time. Total cost=$4 for capacitors (no minimum order size!!) and about 90 minutes with a soldering iron when I do the job.
