Finally isolated the creaking noise I experienced driving over road swells or pushing down on the drivers side front end. After Removing the dust pan and having girlfriend push down on the front corner I could feel the creak resonating through the drivers side inner tie rod. I replaced the rack and Tie rods(from Napa)20,000 miles ago.
Once I lifted the front tires off the ground I could also hear a light clicking as I pulled the tires in both directions and a slight clunk at the end of travel, but no perceivable play..
The creak has also increased in intensity in recent weeks and I am concerned with its safety since I'm driving a few hundred miles next weekend with family to spread my fathers ashes in the Catskills.
Could this be just the inner tie rod or perhaps a defective remanufactured rack. More important, should I have it repaired before the trip?
