I'm excited to get a new (to me) 1991 240 automatic wagon today, but am having some troubles getting it started! The car, which was running fine when parked about a year ago, has been sitting under a tree and hasn't been run since. When putting a new battery in, the lights and gauges lit up, but the car would still not turn over. Only a very slight click when listening under the hood, but no turning over like the car is trying to start.
The previous owner initially tried to jump the car, but hooked the jumper cables incorrectly for about 5 seconds. While I know that is really bad for a car, I'm not sure what first things I can check on the 240 because of that, or because the car has been sitting for so long, or because the battery cables weren't tightened down (even though the lights and such were working). Also, the gear selector would not move out of park with the new battery, so I'm guessing there may be a blown fuse there, which not sure if it's related to the starter in any way?
Are there any particular fuses, fusible links, relays, or cables to focus on? I know there are relays which can go bad, and not sure if that might be related. I'll take a look at the starter cable later, but considering it's not even turning over, I'm guessing it's either connection to it, or the starter is bad (would the starter go bad after just sitting for a year)?
I've done some searching but still not sure of which common areas to check, that are later model 240 specific. I'd really rather avoid a costly tow for something simple!
