If you have a loose shifter, this may help.... 700

Hi folks,

Thought I might pass along a helpful hint to those with the common forward-back loose shifter on their AW transmissions. I removed the panel under my parking brake and shift lever to fiddle with my heated seat switches and replace some bulbs. While in there, I found the cause for my loose shift lever!

Around the shift lever there is a small indented plate, through which the shift lever appears to pass - the plate is maybe 8" x 5". The neutral safety switch is nestled down in there. At each of the four corners of the plate there is a 10mm bolt with a washer. Pushing on the shift lever showed that these bolts allowed the whole plate to shift maybe 4mm, resulting in more than 15mm forward-back play in the shift lever. I tightened the rear two bolts (the front two were nearly inaccessible, perhaps a more ambitious person with a crow's foot socket and a u-joint could do it) and the play was nearly gone.
