Final assembly ... mounting body trim 444-544

I'm ready to mount the stainless body trim on my Duett. Is it advisable to seal each of the clip holes with some of that putty-like stuff? What do you call it? Assuming the answer is yes, is it best to put a gob on and then push the clip through it or to mould it around from the backside after everything is in place?
