'93 244 Odometer and OD trip failure to fix with new gear need help 200

Hi guys:

Not to long past my OD and trip meter went out. As the norm the speedo works fine. I had put off the fix with a new gear purchased from FCP and went at it a few days past without any difficulty as per Dave Barton's directions and other posts as well.

Prior to the failure I could hear a repeat sequence of sounds as the OD rolled over in tenths and miles and at one point I had thought that the noise was from the front wheel rubbing. Upon close examination I determined that the sounds were from the OD and trip counters.

I followed the directions and indeed found that the small gear had 2 teeth missing and put a small amount of lube on the gear shaft and replaced the old gear with the new one. I used a bottle of computer compressed air to blow out the entire mechanism to ensure that no fragments remained. Not sure if that worked.

My test rides so far indicate that my fix did not work as the OD and trip counters both do not work.

One note is that the OD trip reset button seems stiff or is not easy to push in as it was when it was working. Could the OD trip reset be causing an interference fit blocking the rotation of the gears?

Also, could the small OD/trip meter motor failed? If in fact the motor failed how do I determine if that OD/trip motor (sub-system) that the gears are part of either works or does not?

I would like to get some experienced suggestions before I go in and disaseemble the instument panel again.

Thanks in advance for the advise.

Al
