Shift lever in Park, car moves in reverse 200 1992

'92 244 with automatic transmission. When I move shift lever into Park, car will not go into Park, but will move in Reverse instead. Lever stays in Park position. Also, when starting car (shift lever in Park of course) and brake pedal is released, car will move in Reverse. This can be startling! When moving shift lever into Park, I must move lever around while in that Park position. This helps to finally engage Park. Any thoughts?
