444 Windshield 444-544 1958

Trying to learn another new skill with this project - installing glass.

The rear side windows (fixed on my car) and rear window went fine, setting the windows into the rubber gaskets and using cord to pull the gaskets into place. But the windshield looks tougher.

From the Swedish language manual on my CD it looks like I keep the rubber windshield gasket intact, install one pane using cord to pull the gasked in, place the inner part of the center (vertical) gasket in place, install the second pane, again using cord, and then install the outer part of the center gasket and the chrome "windsplit". Two "issues":

1. The gasket I have (from VP Auto Parts) has no provision for the center post. It looks like it is the proper length. But I need to carefully cut away an inch or so on the back side to provide clearance for the center post at the top and bottom, while keeping the outer part of the gasket intact.

2. I was unable to find replacement gaskets for the center (vertical) part. So I am using a one piece molding from a local glass company which I plan to split in two along the middle (where the glass pane goes) in order to be able to install it after the two panes are in place.

Before I start cutting on these gaskets, I would like to hear from any of you who have done this to see if you think I am on the right track.

Thanks,

Keith W.
