I have begun to tackle some things other than mechanical on my '83 wagon. Recently I removed the roof rack and fitted holes with IPD grommets. There are impressions on the paint left behind by the slats.
What's worse, though, is that some of the asphalt-like padding beneath the slats was also left behind in places. The only way I found to remove it was with a heat gun set on low and a piece of wood in the shape of a chisel. That went pretty well after I got the hang of it, but even after getting that off, this thin tobacco colored adhesive-looking stuff was left underneath. I have tried mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, and some of my wife's fingernail polish remover to no avail.
This junk looks like crap on my roof and I really want to get it off without destroying the paint job. I have not yet tried lacquer thinner but probably will when I get some. Has anyone encountered this and removed it successfully? Thanks ahead for worthwhile tips.
