We're talking about a '92 244. Engine has 210K miles. I'm replacing the timing belt, using rope trick, and have been following FAQ procedure (and using Bentley for reference). I've not done a timing belt change before.
Tried using nylon rope 3/16". Found it too flimsy to suit me as I stuffed the rope in #1 cylinder (crank rotated CW about 100 degrees). I'm using a length of vinyl hose to assist guiding the rope into the cylinder. I'm now using 3/16" cotton clothesline. A big improvement. Somehow, I got the idea that I only needed 3-4 feet. Well, that seemed too short (real length - 6'). I then cut a 12' length. Well, I've stuffed 10-11 feet in already and I think I can stuff more into the cylinder!
So, should I cut another length, longer still, and restuff? Or, should I just stop and continue with the next step of rotating the crank CCW? Or, is there an appropriate length to stuff, stop and then rotate crank CCW?
I'm also thinking of replacing seals while the timing belt is off. Hard to get an accurate evaluation of existing seals with crank pulley yet to remove and lower cover still in place. So, should I replace the seals anyway given the 210K miles on the clock?
