Spongy brakes S90-V90 1998

Brake pedal became spongy, diagnosed by repair shop (very highly respected in area, but few Volvos, no dealer in area) as master cylinder problem. Replaced it, but still spongy. No leaks, system checked again by mech, and nothing found. Brakes and ABS work fine except for the spongy pedal. Any experience with this? Thx
